18. Benton Mural

The New York Power Authority commissioned noted artist Thomas Hart Benton to paint this 20 foot wide mural for 30 thousand dollars in 1958. Today it is insured for millions. Note the artist signature and date in the lower left corner. The mural took six months to paint after a year of research. It depicts Father Louis Hennepin’s first view of Niagara Falls in December 1678. His writings of that visit made Niagara Falls a wonder all over Europe. Father Hennepin is flanked on the right by members of the Explorer Sir De LaSalle’s advance party and Indian allies. To the left are the Seneca Indians. A complimentary postcard of this famous painting is available as you leave the Power Vista today.
